Acupuncture for Arthritis in Indian Trail, NC
Arthritis can make everyday movements painful: climbing stairs, gardening, opening a jar, or getting a good night’s sleep. Acupuncture offers a gentle, drug-free way to ease joint pain and stiffness, alongside the care you already get from your doctor.
Every visit is one-on-one with Tamara Koltun, L.Ac., Dipl. Ac., ADS, at our Indian Trail office.
▸ Types of arthritis we help with
▸ How acupuncture may help
Acupuncture uses very fine needles at specific points to calm pain signals and encourage the body’s own pain relievers, such as endorphins. In traditional Chinese medicine, it restores the smooth flow of energy (qi) through the body. For stubborn joint pain, Tamara may add electroacupuncture, a gentle low-level pulse between needles.
▸ What the research shows
One of the largest studies, published in Arthritis & Rheumatism in 2006, followed more than 3,500 people in Germany with chronic knee or hip osteoarthritis. Those who added up to 15 acupuncture sessions to their usual care had less pain, better joint function, and better quality of life than those who received usual care alone. Results vary from person to person, and acupuncture is not a cure, but it is a low-risk option worth considering. See more acupuncture research →
▸ What to expect
▸ Working with your doctor
Acupuncture works alongside your medical care, not instead of it. Keep taking your prescribed medications and keep your regular checkups. See your doctor promptly if a joint becomes hot, red and swollen, especially with fever.

▸ What to expect
- First visit: Tamara reviews your symptoms, medical history and current treatments, and checks the affected joints.
- Treatment: You rest comfortably while the needles stay in place for about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Your plan: Joint pain usually improves gradually, so care is planned as a series of visits. Tamara will recommend a schedule and track your progress with you.
